"My name is Joel Smaltz. I am 14 years old. I recently broke my femur practicing but I am getting better day by day. When I come back, I hope to be able to go to Loretta Lynns qualifiers and hopefully make it to Lorettas. I will also do the 2009 Mini Olympics and possibly more amateur nationals. My long term goal is to be a pro. I will work as hard as I need to to get there. Creswell mx is a great track and I try to practice there as often as I can to get to where I want to be. It's a great place to ride and the facility all together is outstanding."

Kyle Cryer is a very fast 10 year old rider out of Yorktown Virginia.  Kyle started racing 5 years ago at local races and has progressed all the way to the Amateur Nationals including Loretta Lynn's.

It is easy to see how much this young rider likes to be on the bike.  He is quick to tell you "My favorite place is the track."

Kyle's first big race was Branson in 2006 where he finished 8th and 10th.  In 2007 he took home the first of what is expected to be many championships when he won the AMA District 13 Championship 50cc 7-8 stock class.

2008 has been a great year for Kyle who says "I have been pretty serious about it and have started endurance training and working with Jeff Day MX School."  His effort showed when he qualified for Loretta Lynn's National Championship and placed 34th in the 65cc (7-9) class.  Come on out to CMX to see this young man rip up the track!

John Wasco is an up and coming 17 year old rider out of Virginia Beach.  In a recent interview Wasco indicated that Loretta Lynns was his last race as an intermediate rider because he plans to move to the challenging A class in a few weeks.  He will run in both the 250 and 450 A classes.

Despite some bad luck Wasco took home a top 20 finish at Loretta Lynn's in the incredibly tough Motocross B modified class.

John stands out on the track with his smooth style and a unique number ... 09!  When asked what was significant about the number he said "I have always looked up to my Dad and his baseball number was #9 so I have always run number 9."  John switched to 09 after having to run 9x so often because it was such a popular number.  This tribute to his father is a prime example how appreciative this young rider is for the support he receives from his family and his sponsors. John is sponsored by Competition Engines, No Fear, Liquid Performance, FMF, Asterisk, ASV Inventions, Scott, Fifty Five Clothing, Action Clothing, Factory Connection and Nobullfilms.com

#09 has his sites set on turning pro in the next year by running the arenacross circuit long enough to gain the necessary points to run supercross and the outdoors!  All of us at Creswell Motocross Park wish John luck with his transition to the A class and look forward to seeing the great results.

Alex Hindle, #65, is a MX Lites B class rider out of Virginia Beach, Virginia.   This seventeen year old rider is focused on taking the necessary steps to turn pro in 2009.  Alex used three class wins and five podiums at the Budds Creek Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier as a launching pad for the regional at the legendary Red Bud where he secured his ticket to Loretta Lynn's in both the MX lites stock and mod classes.  #65 will take his Honda machines to Texas over the next few weeks where he will put the finishing touches on his training and set his sites on a top 5 at next months Loretta Lynn's Amateur National.  Alex is a frequent visitor at CMX and says that he enjoys the "all round challenge" found at Creswell Motocross Park.  Everyone at CMX wishes Alex luck at Lorettas!

Academic

John is a 15 year old freshman at Cape Henry Collegiate School in Virginia Beach.  John has made the honor roll every semester and understands that making the honor roll is required of him to continue his motocross activities.  John plans to attend college at UVA upon graduation from Cape Henry.

Motocross History

John is a relative newcomer to the sport of motocross.  His first experience ever on a motorcycle was on a Suzuki 125cc trail bike at Currituck Motocross in the spring of 2005.  John quickly realized he loved riding motorcycles and also learned the shortcomings of riding a trail bike on a motocross track.  He persuaded his father to buy him a real race bike during the summer of 2005.  John trained at CMX on his KX85 almost every weekend during 2005 and competed in his first race in January, 2006 where he finished in 5th place.  John was officially addicted to competitive motocross racing.

For the 2006 racing season, John placed 2nd in the Grand Championship series in the 85cc class for 12-15 year old riders and placed 3rd in the 100cc class for 9-13 year old riders.  The Grand Championship series is a 13 race series run on tracks in VA and NC.  John finished in 5th place overall for the year in District 13.

To prepare for the 2007 racing season, John and his family spent the winter at their home in South Florida and trained at the Seminole Tribe Motocross track every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.  Cape Henry Collegiate School consented, for the first time in its history, to allow John and his brother, Christian, to train in Florida during the 2007 winter while continuing their education at a private school in Florida specializing in the education of young athletes.  This extensive training in South Florida catapulted John to the next level of riding skills.

John returned to Virginia in March, 2007 and promptly won the United States Eastern Spring series on his Barr Competition prepared KX85.  This is an 11 race series run at motocross tracks in Virginia and North Carolina.  John bested his nearest competitor by almost 50 points despite missing two races.  John went on to win the AMA District 13 motocross championship in the 85cc class for 12 to 15 year old riders.  John was presented with his first place trophy, plaque and coveted jacket at the annual AMA awards ceremony on February 9th in Virginia Beach.  For the 2007 racing season John finished in the top four positions an impressive 70% of the time and took top honors on three occasions.

To prepare for the 2008 racing season John trained at the Millsap’s Training Facility in Cairo, GA. in March.  Millsap’s provided John with the skills he needed to successfully move up to 250cc machines on which he will race in Lites C and Schoolboy II.  Unfortunately, Johns 2008 racing season has started off on a sour note.  John broke his thumb in a fall during the last day of training at Millsap’s.  This injury sidelined John for 4 weeks.  John’s first race after the broken thumb resulted in a dislocated elbow, which will sideline him for another 8-10 weeks.

John is very appreciative and proud of the sponsorship and support he receives from Brewer Cycles in Henderson, NC and also appreciates the help he receives from Cycle World in Virginia Beach.
